Maria Cristina Bergenholtz passed away quietly on October 16, 2010 at her home at Alta Lake Golf Course at the age of 72 after a short battle with Leukemia. Cristina was born the oldest daughter of Bernardino Rosas Lopez and Matilde Guzman Orcos in Mexico City, Mexico. She attended school in Mexico City for 12 years. She then worked for 25 years as an executive secretary for the President of Dupont, also in Mexico City. Cristina met the love of her life, Jim Bergenholtz whom she married in March of 1984. They subsequently planned and built their dream home at Alta Lake. She loved her home, it was her pride and joy. Cristina became a naturalized US citizen in April of 1998. Cristina volunteered her time in the library at the Pateros School and was later hired as the migrant bilingual home visitor and records clerk paraeducator. She worked in that position for 24 years, right up to the recent onset of her illness. She has received several excellence awards for her outstanding dedication to her job. Cristina loved her job and the children she worked with. It has been said “She has done more for the migrant children than anyone could ever have imagined!” Cristina is survived by her sister, Isabel Rosas Guzman; her brothers, Carlos Bernardino Rosas Guzman and Victor Manuel Rosas Guzman and numerous nieces and nephews all residing in Mexico. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law Gene and Paul Bergenholtz; her step-son Todd Bergenholtz and their families in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. Cristina was cared for during her short illness by specials friends; several Pateros School District staff members; Sharon Hagemann of Clark Fork, ID; and Catherine Hulin of Gobles, Michigan. Additionally Cristina leaves behind many friends, neighbors, co-workers, children and members of the Hispanic community who loved her. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Oct. 23, 2010 at 1:00 PM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster. Following the service, there will be a reception in the Parish Hall with light refreshments.
