Ernest Oliver Newby, 73, of Manson, WA passed away December 26th at home. He was born in Phoenix, AZ October 16, 1940 to Joseph Leonidas Newby and Letta Arizona Holmes Newby. When he was young his family moved to Bridgeport, WA where he attended school. He graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1959. He then served an active tour of duty in the United States Navy. He married Betty Edson, of Bridgeport, and they had a daughter, Dawn Marie. A later marriage to Carol Covey, of Omak, game him a daughter, Kelly Lynn. He married Suzanne Boyd, of Chelan, on June 23, 1990 in Coeur d’ Alene, ID.. He worked many years for General Telephone Company while living in Wenatchee, Priest River, ID, and Brewster. He then moved to Chelan and Manson area where he worked for different employers, those being Cascade Cable, Lake Entiat Estates, and Chelan Realty. Ernie loved sports and in his younger years he refereed basketball and football games. He also loved hunting and fishing and a good poker game. He was a member of American Legion Post 97 in Brewster. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. He is survived by his wife Suzanne, of the home. Two daughters, Dawn Marie, of Sumner, WA and Kelly Chapman of Pelican, AK. Two stepdaughters, Trudy Rance, of Orlando, FL and Teri Martinez, of Granberry, TX. One stepson, Mark Boyd, of Kyle, TX. His surviving sisters are JoAnn Leithold, of Pateros, Judy Butler, of Okanogan, and Harriette Voss of Sandpoint, ID. Also surviving him are nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Celebration of Ernie’s life will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. at the American Legion Post 97 at Brewster, Washington. A potluck will follow.
